Project description
A proposed Bwindi Eco Farm brings seed banking, nurseries and climate-smart food production into existing community programs. Skills training, women’s enterprise and conservation-based tourism create alternatives to livelihoods that put pressure on nearby forests.
Explore the community context, existing work and development plans described by the project.
Project Overview
Mindset Village Walk is a community-led initiative operating in the remote highland regions surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The project works with highly marginalized populations, including Batwa communities, refugees, women, youth, and vulnerable children, to address interconnected challenges related to poverty, environmental degradation, and lack of access to services.
The initiative has already established programming in education, conservation awareness, and livelihood training, and is now seeking to transition into a fully integrated community development model centered around the proposed Bwindi Eco Farm.
Back to sections ↑Community Context
The project operates in a remote mountainous region with limited access to:
- Roads
- Healthcare
- Education
- Financial systems
The population includes:
- Indigenous Batwa communities
- Refugees from DRC and Rwanda
- High-density households with limited resources
Current economic activities include:
- Charcoal production
- Timber harvesting
- Small-scale agriculture
- Artisanal mining
- Informal trade
These practices have contributed to:
- Deforestation
- Water pollution
- Biodiversity loss
- Poor health outcomes
- Limited economic mobility
Ecological & Environmental Context
Ecosystem Type: Mountain forest / buffer zone ecosystem
Key Environmental Challenges:
- Deforestation from charcoal and logging
- River contamination from gold mining
- Habitat degradation affecting wildlife, including mountain gorillas
- Soil degradation and reduced agricultural productivity
Primary Restoration Opportunity:
- Reforestation of buffer zones around Bwindi
- Establishment of nurseries and seed systems
- Community-led conservation linked to livelihoods
Integrated Project Systems
The project will develop an integrated community hub centered around the Bwindi Eco Farm (3 acres), serving as both a demonstration site and operational base.

- A seedling production center for reforestation efforts
- A demonstration site for integrated community restoration
The project can support:
- Farmer training programs
- Seed distribution networks
- Youth vocational development
- Cross-project learning within Uganda
Collaboration & Partnerships
The project will collaborate with:
- Collaborative for Change
- Local community groups and leadership
- Regional initiatives focused on conservation and livelihoods
Key collaboration opportunities include:
- Seed and knowledge exchange
- Market linkages for community products
- Joint training programs
- Country-level coordination through cohort systems
Key Needs & Opportunities
To scale effectively, the project requires:
- Seed funding for core infrastructure (nursery, training center, farm setup)
- Access to seed systems and technical training
- Support in communications and visibility
- Partnerships for market access and product development
Vision (5–10 Years)
The long-term vision is to establish a self-sustaining community ecosystem where:
- Environmental restoration supports livelihoods
- Communities are economically independent
- Youth and women are empowered through skills and enterprise
- The Bwindi Eco Farm serves as a model for replication across Uganda and the region
Summary
Mindset Village Walk represents a high-potential, community-led initiative operating in a critical ecological and social landscape. By integrating environmental restoration with livelihood development and social support systems, the project aligns strongly with Collaborative for Change’s model of building ecologically, socially, and economically resilient communities.
